Types of John Deere Hay & Forage Equipment
John Deere's hay and forage lineup covers every step from cutting to baling. At Legacy Equipment, we stock four categories of equipment for hay producers across Missouri and Arkansas:
Round Balers: the Zero Series spans from entry-level E models suited for smaller hay operations up to high-capacity M and R models built for commercial acres, with all configurations available for purchase at our locations
Large Square Balers: the L331R and L341R produce consistent square bales that stack efficiently for commercial storage and transport, with the High Density version delivering bales up to 30 percent heavier than standard models
Mower-Conditioners: pull-type and mounted options cut and condition in a single pass, reducing the time your hay spends in the field before it is ready to bale
Hay Rakes: wheel rakes and tedders to spread or windrow cut hay and accelerate drying so you can bale on schedule
Our team can help you compare models across all four categories and build the right equipment combination for your operation. Contact your nearest Legacy Equipment location to check availability or request pricing.
John Deere Round Balers & Square Balers for Sale
Choosing between round and square bales comes down to how you store, handle, and sell your crop. Round bales shed water well and move easily with a loader, making them a practical fit for operations feeding livestock in the field. Square bales stack tighter, deliver more tons per load, and are easier to sell and transport commercially. We carry both, and current models are available at our Missouri and Arkansas locations.
Round Balers
The John Deere Zero Series round baler lineup covers a range of operation sizes and throughput requirements. The entry-level E models (440E and 450E) require 45-162 PTO horsepower and produce bales up to 51 inches in diameter, making them a solid fit for smaller hay operations. The M and R models (450M, 460M, 460R, 550M, 560M, 560R) increase capacity and durability, with the 560 Series producing bales up to 2,500 pounds for high-volume commercial operations.
All Zero Series round balers use the MegaWide HC2 pickup, running 71 to 87 inches wide depending on the model. The wider pickup handles large windrows and scattered rows without leaving crop behind, so you maintain field speed instead of slowing down to recover missed material. DiamondTough belts resist wear across high-volume seasons and keep the bale chamber tightly sealed, maintaining consistent bale shape to reduce wasted wrap.
The hydraulic drop floor lets you clear a plug from the cab without stopping the tractor, which reduces downtime during short baling windows. BaleTrack Pro and BaleTrack Plus monitors track density, diameter, and wrapping in real time so you can adjust on the fly instead of discovering inconsistent bales at the stack. Cover-Edge net wrap seals the ends of each bale more tightly, protecting quality through storage and reducing spoilage.
Large Square Balers
John Deere large square balers are built for consistent bale density and reliable knotting across high-volume hay seasons. The L331R, L341R, and L341R High Density are available at Legacy Equipment:

The L341R High Density version increases bale weight by up to 30 percent compared to standard large square baler models. That translates directly to more tons per load when hauling commercially, lowering your transport cost per ton and reducing the number of trips needed to clear the field.
The BalerAssist drivetrain lets you clear plugs hydraulically from the cab without stopping the tractor, cutting downtime during critical baling windows. A built-in moisture sensor monitors bale moisture in near real time throughout the baling process, helping you decide when to bale and avoid putting up hay that will heat in storage. Bale documentation through the John Deere Operations Center lets you track yield and moisture field by field and year over year with Bale Doc, giving you the records to plan your cutting schedule and verify hay quality to buyers.
Mower-Conditioners & Hay Rakes for Sale
Cutting and conditioning in a single pass saves a field trip and gets the crop drying sooner, which matters when your baling window is short. John Deere's Zero Series mower-conditioners handle alfalfa, grass hay, and mixed stands, with pull-type and mounted configurations available depending on your tractor size and the number of acres you need to cover.
Pull-Type Mower-Conditioners
The Zero Series pull-type lineup comes in side-pull and center-pivot configurations. Side-pull models (S250, S300, S350) cover cutting widths from 8 feet 2 inches to 11 feet 6 inches and are well suited for smaller tractors and tighter fields. Center-pivot models (C300 through C500) scale up to 16 feet 4 inches of cutting width for higher-volume operations where covering more acres per day is the priority.
Quick Change Knives cut knife change time in half compared to a traditional cutterbar, reducing maintenance downtime during peak hay season. John Deere backs the cutterbar with a 5-year warranty. Four conditioner options let you match conditioning intensity to your crop:
Impeller conditioner: aggressive crimping action for heavy-stemmed crops that need faster drying
Urethane roll conditioner: gentler on the crop, preferred for alfalfa and legumes where preserving leaf quality matters
V10 roll conditioner: versatile roll profile suited to a range of hay types and field conditions
Tri-Lobe roll conditioner: stepped roll profile for more thorough conditioning on coarse or mixed-stem crops
Adjustable swath boards and forming vanes give you precise control over windrow width and placement. The forming vanes can widen the windrow by up to 25 percent, increasing the surface area exposed to sun and air so your hay reaches target moisture faster. Connected Support and Expert Alerts are built in so our service team can monitor machine health remotely and get parts moving before an issue causes unplanned downtime.
Mounted Mower-Conditioners
For operations that need maximum cutting capacity per pass, John Deere mounted mower-conditioners attach front or rear and cover significantly more ground than pull-type models. The front-mounted F310R cuts 10.2 feet and requires 100 PTO horsepower; the F350R cuts 11.5 feet and requires 120 PTO horsepower. The rear-mounted R870R, R950R, and R990R scale up to 32 feet of cutting width for tractors in the 210-250 PTO horsepower range, covering more acres per day to make the most of a narrow hay window.
Hay Rakes
We also carry John Deere hay rakes to complete your lineup. Whether you need a tedder to spread cut hay and accelerate field drying or a wheel rake to windrow before baling, our team can help you match the right rake to your cutting width and baling capacity. Current models are available at our Missouri and Arkansas locations.
